The DNA India summarise this so well by saying “Today time is a luxury. Handcrafting takes time, and the use of increasingly endangered skills. When something is lovingly handmade for personal use, the process is slow and the design evolves”. This is where the spirit of creativity shines through. The intricacy and finesse that comes with handcrafted creations is what distinguishes Indian fashion from the rest of the world. It is these intricate details that give Indian dresses their luxurious effects. Sadly, much of this beauty is only experienced through traditional outfits, worn mainly at special events, festivities and weddings. But the art and craftsmanship is something we believe should be experienced and so share 5 ways to add a touch of East to your wardrobe.

1. The art of block printing

Block printing definitely holds a place a pride in India. It involves the age-old craft of dyeing and colouring fabric using wooden blocks. Originating in Rajasthan, the process of block printing is a labour of love. The blocks are made of teak wood, with the design intricately hand-carved. They are then soaked in oil for 10-15 days to soften the timber. The fabric is first washed so it is free of starch and any tie-dyeing that is needed is completed.

The fabric is then pinned to a printing table and the blocks dipped into colour and pressed onto the fabric. This process is repeated until the fabric is covered in the required design. Precision is key. The fabric is than dried in the sun, steamed, washed, dried again and lastly ironed!
